Getting to the IUFRO meeting in Eberswalde, Germany
Most information on local travel can be found on the internet page of the German railways , www.bahn.de. The site offers the search-page in various languages. Simply enter the starting point (e.g. Berlin Tegel airport, or Berlin Schoenefeld airport) and where/when you want to go (e.g. Chorin, or Eberswalde), and the best connections, including buses and trains, will be shown.
BY AIR: Berlin is connected to all major cities in Europe. Flights go either into Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) or Berlin Schönefeld Airport (SXF, former airport of East Berlin). From North America, only Delta Airlines has a direct service to Berlin (Flights out of JFK-Airport in New York). All other flights go through major European hubs like London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt or Amsterdam. All major rental car companies are present at both airports. We do, however, recommend the public transportation system, as it is much faster and cheaper.
Public transportation from the airports to Eberswalde / Chorin is easy:
A) From Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL): From the gate, follow the signs to “exit / ground transportation / main hall”.
Buy a ticket inside the airport terminal (counter of “Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe” BVG in the main hall) or outside at the sales machine (they offer many languages), or from the bus driver (though the drivers are not too helpful…). Your destination is either “Chorin” or “Eberswalde”. The ticket should cost around 5 Euro (one-way) to Eberswalde or Chorin.
Take the bus “TXL” right outside the main hall to “Berlin Hauptbahnhof” (central train station). The trip takes around 15-20 minutes.
In the train station, check the boards for trains of the line RE 3, usually heading for either Angermünde, Pasewalk, Stralsund or Schwedt.
There is a train every hour, usually leaving from the lowest floor on platform 5, around half past the hour (e.g. 2:34 p.m.).
If you are going to the meetings hotels in Chorin and the mixer on Sunday, we recommend to stay on the train until you reach “Chorin” station (NOT Eberswalde!). This takes around 40 minutes from Berlin, and there are usually 5 stops on the way from Berlin. If you tell us your time of arrival in Chorin train station, we will arrange pick-up service and transportation to your hotel. If you prefer to walk: It is 15 min. walking time to the Haus Chorin, just follow the directions to “Kloster Chorin” (Chorin monastery).
If you are staying in Eberswalde or simply coming to the sessions, get off the train in Eberswalde and either take a taxi from outside the Eberswalde train station (approx. 4-5 Euros), or the bus no. 861 or 862 to “Markt” (Market). Bus stop is on the left side when you leave the train station, on the bridge, approx. 100m walking. The bus fare is included in the train ticket! From bus stop “Markt”, walk to the lecture hall just 100 meters away, and watch for the IUFRO-sign. Note: Not all trains to Stralsund go through Eberswalde! Please check the announcement / board for the right train.

BY TRAIN: If you travel by train, mostly you will have to go through Berlin. There are a few trains, however, from the north or northeast (from Stralsund and Stettin (Szeczin) in Poland, as well as from the island of Rügen, where the ferries from Scandinavia arrive). These trains stop in Eberswalde on their way to Berlin

BY CAR: travelling with a car is more difficult than getting around than by train! The Germans are excellent drivers, but if you are arriving from your usual rural surroundings (e.g., Illinois) the Autobahn may seem very exciting.
To the main hotels in Chorin:Take Autobahn 11 (Interstate 11) from Berlin in direction of Stettin /Szeczin and take the exit “Joachimsthal” and follow the signs to “Angermünde” (highway B 198).
After approx. 10 km, you pass the signs for the village of “Ziethen”. Continue and turn right (direction “Eberswalde”) after another 2 km, at the next larger road crossing (highway B 2).
After approx. 10 km, you will reach the sign for “Chorin”, then turn right and follow the signs to the hotels.
To the lecture halls in Eberswalde:
Take Autobahn 11 (Interstate 11) from Berlin in direction of Stettin /Szeczin and take the exit “Finowfurt / Eberswalde” and follow the signs to “Eberswalde” (highway B 167).
After approx. 7 km, you will reach the center of Eberswalde. Turn right at the McDonalds restaurant in the shopping mall. The lecture hall is close to the market square and the town house.
Follow the signs for parking garages (there are 2) and walk to the lecture hall, watch for the IUFRO-sign.
Warning: There is metered parking only, and tickets are handed out frequently, so do not forget to pay at the machine and put the ticket on your car´s dash!
